Holly (Ilex)
Hollies are one of the finest plants to use for structure, topiary and hedging in the garden.
Their shiny leaves, displays of berries and range of foliage colours and leaf size lifts them above the usual options for box or yew.
They grow well in most soils and will tolerate waterlogging, drought and are animal and disease resistant
Liquidambar styraciflua
The cultivar ‘Corky’ is a good choice for the smaller garden. Attractive mid green glossy leaves turn red in Autumn. Tolerate of heat and drought conditions.
Penstemon digitalis
Originates from the Prairies in America’s Midwest, so well adapted to the extremes of very cold winters, hot summers and spells of rainfall. Blush white flowers throughout summer on wiry stems are resistant to slugs too.
Persicaria affinis ‘Darjeeling Red’
This is a compact, groundcover plant with bottlebrush flowers that open pink before turning red.
They are tolerant of waterlogged soils in winter and drought conditions in summer.
What’s not to love about Salvia Amethyst Lips.
With colourful flowers over a long period; it’s drought tolerant, low maintenance, resistance to plant mulching animals and disease.
And, as an added bonus, it’s excellent for wildlife too!
A top choice for a garden that’s waterlogged in winter and bone dry in the summer.
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Flamingo’ is a deciduous grass with deep pink flower plumes in later summer that fade to silver in autumn.
Siberian Irises are graceful plants.
They are tolerant of many conditions, partial shade, to full sun, dry spots, to really wet and quite acidic soils, although they may take a little longer to establish.
Daphne Eternal Fragrance is a neat compact variety, with late spring/early summer fragrant blooms.
It’s a very hardy plant, and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. This lovely evergreen is particularly drought tolerant.
Liatris Spicata is easy to grow and it’s spires of pinky/purple flowers have a striking exotic quality.
They might struggle in very water-logged soil, but because they push their roots down it makes them resilient to drought.
These colourful versatile evergreens are tolerant of short-term water-logging and can also tolerate drought. Phormium come in a wide range of colours, pinks, yellows, blacks and purples.
Their sword like foliage will provide an architectural look to any border.
Elaeagnus
Sometimes underrated, and not a particularly showy shrub, although the variegated varieties provide the perfect foil for other garden plants.
Elaeagnus are good structural plants and are tolerant of wind, they are also salt tolerant making them an excellent choice for costal and exposed planting.
