October is a good month to tidy the borders before the days become shorter and colder.  Cut back any clump forming perennials such as Geraniums, Nepeta and Geums to the rosette of new growth.  Cut back any soft foliage and stems as they die back on Hostas, Monarda, Peonies, Dahlias.  If leaving Dahlias in the ground for the winter, mulch, building it up in a heap to help protect the tubers.
