These vigorous climbers can be sheared all over, removing the spent flowers. Unavoidably after many years growth they may become congested, at which point it is best to rejuvinate them by cutting all the stems down to the base after flowering and applying a balanced fertiliser.  

Other Clematis cultivars to prune now, Cirrhosa, Alpina and Armandii.  Begin dead heading roses and other perennials such as Lupins to keep blooms coming all summer. Now is also the time to prune stone fruit such as cherries and plums .
