Now all the leaves have fallen, and the framework of shrubs and trees can be seen, December is a good month to prune out any straight (non-contorted stems) on twisted Hazels.  You can also prune off a few twisted stems for decoration on your Christmas wreath or table display.   

Birches and Acers can also be pruned now, removing only necessary small branches where needed, this helps to reduce sap 'bleeding' from the pruning cuts which can these varieties.
