As the bright flowers of Chaenomeles fade, now is the time to give these beauties a prune by cutting out any dead or diseased wood, old woody stems, and then generally shape as required. Often these are trained on a wall so need pruning within their means.

Consider pruning other early spring flowering shrubs such as Forsythia and Ribes.  May is also a good time to cut back Penstemons, fuchsias and Salvia Mexicana varieties.
